The IJtunnel is located in Amsterdam and was opened in 1968. The original ventilation system was especially designed for the removal of traffic emissions. We adjusted the system so that in case of fire, living conditions in the tunnel were improved. The current system is complemented by a system of longitudinal ventilation.
To make sure that the combination of the new and existing ventilation system worked as optimally as possible, Tunnel Safety Consults was asked to create the necessary design and carry out CFD simulations. The simulations were performed at different fire sizes and conditions during a fire. The results provide evidence that the system works properly, and we can use these results to optimize this way of switching between systems.
